UPDATE: 10/20/2025 - WALB has now learned from officials that the vehicle involved in the deadly hit-and-run has been located.
The information was confirmed on a Facebook post by the Georgia Department of Public Safety.
COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - A fatal hit-and-run crash is under active investigation after a man was killed Saturday night along Georgia State Route 133 in Colquitt County.
According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), the crash occurred at approximately 8:57 p.m. near Mike Horne Road. Troopers responded to the scene where a Mercury vehicle, traveling northbound in the right lane, was attempting to turn into a private driveway when it was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle.
The impact caused the Mercury to veer off the roadway, rotate clockwise, and travel through a ditch before coming to rest facing south. Authorities confirmed the crash was a hit-and-run, and the identity of the striking vehicle remains unknown.
One of the Mercury’s rear passengers, identified as 52-year-old Erik Kitchens, was transported to Colquitt Regional Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators believe the vehicle involved in the collision is possibly a Dodge Ram truck — either a 1500, 2500, or 3500 model, manufactured between 2019 and 2024. The truck is expected to have damage to the front bumper, grille, and passenger-side headlight area.
The GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT-G) is actively investigating the incident.
Anyone with information about the crash or the suspected vehicle is urged to contact the Troop G Communication Center at (229) 931-7000.
