ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Albany police said Ricky Williams died after being beaten in a gang initiation he was trying to join.

“It’s highly unfortunate that person would rather be involved in that activity instead of joining something more conductive,” Albany Police Chief Michael Persley said.

Williams family says they never imagined him wanting to join a gang.

“We never known him to want to be in a gang, he’s just so friendly, he would do stuff for anybody, let folks hold money and stay at his house,” said Sholanda Polk, Williams’ aunt.

Williams was dropped off at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital on Jan. 3 after the beating. He had knots on his head and a puncture wound to his neck. He did not survive his injuries.

The beating happened on Pinson Avenue. Police say 26-year-old Lavontay McDaniel and another person took Williams to the hospital.

Currently, a 17-year-old is in custody. Police are still looking for McDaniel.

Chief Persley is calling on the community to help steer young people away from gang activity.

“It is imperative upon the community that we push our young people to make better choices,” Persley said. “Joining a gang is not the answer, never has been, and will never be.
