WASHINGTON (TNND) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had a fiery message for United States President Donald Trump after his country won the 4 Nations Face-Off Thursday night.
Connor McDavid scored at 8:18 of overtime to give Canada a 3-2 victory over the United States.
"You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game," Trudeau wrote on X.
Trump has been outspoken in the past few weeks about wanting Canada to become the "51st state" causing political tension to spill over into sports.
During a Super Bowl preshow on Fox News, Trump told Bret Baier, "I think Canada would be much better off being the 51st state because we lose $200 billion a year with Canada. And I'm not going to let that happen."
The U.S. national anthem was also loudly booed before NHL and NBA games on Feb. 2 after Trump agreed to a 30-day pause on tariff threats against the country.
Before the hockey game on Thursday, Trump invited Trudeau to the Republican Governors Association saying "he would be most welcome" while adding that one day maybe Canada will be the 51st state.
In further protest of the change, singer Chantal Kreviazuk switched the lyrics of the Canadian Anthem from "in all of us command" to "that only us command."
She posted a photo on Instagram explaining the change saying "In this very peculiar and potentially consequential moment I truly believe that we must stand up, use our voices and try to protect ourselves no - we should express our outrage in the face of any abuses of power."
A recent survey by the Angus Reid Institute found that 90% of Canadians were opposed to being part of the United States.
Jon Cooper, the team Canada coach, acknowledged the political significance of the win after the game stating "This one was different. This wasn't a win for themselves. This was a win for 4-plus million people."
