Description
August is usually the time during hurricane season where the Atlantic begins to wake up in the tropics and that is exactly what we are seeing right now.
As of the 11AM advisory from the National Hurricane Center, a disturbance over the Central Subtropical Atlantic was able to organize into our third storm of the season, Tropical Storm Cristobal. No impacts to land are expected as it sits in the middle of the northern Atlantic Ocean. Winds are sustained at 45mph but not much strengthening is expected as it approaches very strong wind shear and will fall apart quickly. Cristobal will be known as a brief “fish storm” to cross a name off the list.
Another area to watch in the Atlantic is Invest 92L with an 80% chance of development. It sits in the Main Development Region (MDR) where many tropical systems form this time of year. This area contains waters above 80 degrees and usually little wind shear. Conditions are favorable for development within the next day or two which would make this disturbance be Dolly. Models hint to this system forming then being impacted by fairly moderate to strong wind shear. This means the strength of potential Dolly would be expected to stay tropical storm strength with strong model agreement that it will trek toward the Lesser Antilles. No direct impacts to the US expected.
Right behind Invest 92L is another disturbance just west of the African Coast. It currently is an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms and has a 30% chance of development in the next 7 days. We will continue to monitor this system in the coming days.
