Description
COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) – A dramatic high-speed pursuit in Coffee County on the night of February 20, led to serious injuries for both a Georgia State Trooper and the suspect involved in the chase.
According to the incident report from GSP, at around 10:45 p.m., a Trooper conducting routine patrol on Crescent Circle initiated a traffic stop on a silver Dodge Charger for a traffic violation. However, the driver of the vehicle failed to stop and fled the scene, prompting the Trooper to pursue the suspect.
The Trooper attempted a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver on Baker Highway to stop the fleeing vehicle, but the initial attempt was unsuccessful. The driver continued to accelerate and flee recklessly. Backup Troopers joined the pursuit as the chase continued.
A second PIT maneuver was executed near Mallard Pointe Drive on Baker Highway. This time, the maneuver was successful, causing the suspect’s vehicle to leave the roadway, strike a culvert and light pole, and overturn, coming to rest upright.
Following the successful PIT, the Trooper lost control of his patrol vehicle, veering off the shoulder of the road and striking a series of trees before his vehicle also overturned, coming to rest upright.
Both the Trooper and the suspect sustained serious injuries. The Trooper was transported to Navicent Medical Center in Macon by Air Evac, while the suspect was taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, also by Air Evac.
Authorities are still investigating the incident.
