ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - On December 18, 1985, the film adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel “The Color Purple” was released.
Walker is a Georgia native from the city of Eatonton, Georgia.
The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and follows the story of a Black teenager named Celie finding empowerment and freedom while enduring abuse in the Deep South.
Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery were all cast in the film and were all nominated for Academy Awards for their roles.
“The Color Purple” was later adapted into a musical in Atlanta in 2004 and later made it to Broadway in 2005.
