ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Holiday travel is set to kick off this week as millions of people hit the roads, rails and skies for Thanksgiving.
“Right now it looks easygoing. So I hope it’s easygoing coming back,” said John Jackson, who will travel this Thanksgiving.
A busy holiday travel season is right around the corner. AAA said nearly 82 million people will travel starting Tuesday, including 2.3 million Georgians who will travel mainly by car.
“I’m going to visit my family, eat some creole food,” Jackson said.
Some people who normally travel said this year they are staying home.
“Because of traffic, and ’cause the flights are just getting back together with TSA, and I don’t want to be caught in that,” said Dr. Margaret P. Bean, who is not traveling for Thanksgiving.
Bean said she knows the struggles TSA workers have been through. As a federal employee herself, she was furloughed during the 43-day shutdown.
“It’s hard to get up every day knowing you’re not going to get paid… or someone else deciding your fate about your bills. So at the end of the day, it’s kind of hard to say I’m going in enthusiastic to do my job,” Bean said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said they expect this year to be the busiest Thanksgiving travel season in 15 years, with more than 52,000 flights forecast for Tuesday. This comes as the majority of TSA workers have received the back pay owed to them from the historic shutdown.
“Everybody and they grandma coming,” said Terry Young, who has worked at the Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport for the past few years. “You just expect the unexpected. It’s a great place to work at because it’s never dull on the holiday.”
“I hope everybody fly normal and it don’t get packed so we can get on about our business,” said Jackson.
The Trump administration recently dropped a Biden-era proposal that would have required compensation for flight delays. However, airlines in the U.S. must refund passengers for cancellations.
Travelers are advised to read the regulations on their tickets.
