Description

NEW YORK (TNND) — Suspect UnitedHealthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione is requesting a laptop in his New York jail cell to reportedly use for legal purposes and not for personal use.

In the court filing reviewed by The Associated Press, Mangione's lawyers proposed he get a laptop configured solely for looking at documents, video and other material in connection to the shooting death of Brian Thompson.

Similar limited-laptop provisions have been made for some other defendants in the federal lockup where Mangione is being held.

According to Mangione's lawyers, prosecutors are frowning on the laptop request, saying that some witnesses have been threatened.

Defense lawyer Karen Friedman Agnifilo wrote that there's “no connection to Mr. Mangione for any of said alleged threats.”

Mangione is facing charges in the state of New York with murder as an act of terrorism. During his arraignement hearing in December, he pleaded not guilty.

The 26-year-old is accused of ambushing and gunning down Thompson as he walked to an investor conference in Midtown Manhattan.

An unsealed federal complaint also charges him with two counts of stalking and one count each of murder through the use of a firearm and a firearms offense.

Murder by firearm could bring the possibility of the death penalty if Mangione is convicted, while the maximum sentence for the state charges is life in prison without parole.

He hasn't entered a plea to the federal charges or to state-level gun possession and other charges in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested days after Thompson's death.

The lawyers representing him in Pennsylvania are seeking to dismiss the criminal charges he faces in the state by arguing that the charges were based on evidence "received as a fruit of an illegal stop, seizure, detention, and/or arrest."
