ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A key piece of President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda faces a critical test on Sunday night.
The House Budget Committee will reconvene following an unexpected setback late last week.
President Trump’s proposed tax package could make over $880 million in cuts to Medicaid, food stamps and other social programs.
On Friday, the bill stalled after five conservative Republicans joined Democrats in voting against it. Their opposition prevented the bill from moving forward.
The package would also fund increased military spending and enhanced border security — key priorities for the Trump administration.
Critics say the legislation would hurt low-income Americans. Democratic Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia, who represents parts of DeKalb and Gwinnett counties, expressed some strong opposition.
“His MAGA minions in Congress are cutting benefits for everyday working people, many of whom can’t get by without those benefits,” Johnson said. “Working people and poor people.”
On the other hand, supporters argue that this bill fulfills campaign promises. Republican Rep. Lloyd Smucker of Pennsylvania lawmakers are working closely with the Trump administration to move this tax package forward.
“The president weighing in is always helpful here,” Smucker said. “We’re trying to work with the administration, to ensure that we pass his agenda as well as the agenda or the mandate to make good in the mandate the American people have given us in the election.”
If passed, the bill could have significant impacts on thousands of Georgia residents, particularly those who rely on federal assistance programs.
The House Budget Committee is scheduled to reconvene tonight at 10 p.m. for a revote on this bill.
