PHILADELPHIA (TNND) — An 18-year-old who was celebrating the Philadelphia Eagles beating the Washington Commanders and making it to the Super Bowl has died after falling from a light pole, according to officials.
Tyler Sabapathy sustained critical injuries after the fall and passed away Tuesday afternoon, Temple University confirmed in an announcement to students.
"The loss of a promising 18-year-old man like Tyler is both tragic and traumatic," the university said. "There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing. Our hearts go out to Tyler’s family, friends, classmates and all who knew and loved him."
Video shows the teen on a street pole before he fell onto the concrete sidewalk and landed on his back, hitting his head, WPVI reported. He was taken to Jefferson Hospital with a brain injury and pronounced dead two days later.
The university described Sabapathy as a thriving student within the College of Public Health where he was majoring in exercise and sport science. He was an accomplished gymnast with more than 120 medals and "he no doubt had a bright future ahead of him," the school said.
Staff said grief counselors would be available for students and staff.
City officials would not confirm to WPVI if the poles were greased, adding they don't want to release public safety tactics.
At least three people were injured after a car drove into a crowd of fans celebrating the Eagles win.
In a social media post, the Philadelphia Police Department described the incident as an "Auto Vs. Pedestrians crash" adding it did not "appear intentional at this time." The driver of the vehicle had been taken into custody.
