SALEM, Ore. (KATU) — A dozen people were wounded, with five in serious condition, after a man went on a stabbing spree at a Salem men’s shelter on Sunday night.

The stabbing was reported at about 7:15 p.m. at the Union Gospel Mission on Commercial Street NE.

Initial reports stated that Tony Latrell Williams, 42, of Bend, was talking with people in the lobby when he pulled out a knife and stabbed several people.

“Others present who attempted to intervene in the melee were also injured,” Deputy Chief Trevin Upkes said. “[Williams] then exited the building and stabbed others who were sitting nearby.”

Officers caught Williams across the street, recovering a knife that they believe was used in the stabbing. Upkes said that the knife was recovered minutes after the suspect's arrest.

A witness who captured video of the arrest described the crime scene as "astonishing."

Caleb Rennie, 19, said he was at a gym nearby when the stabbing occurred.

"Never would I have thought that something like this would happen. Eleven people is just, I don't know, a lot of people, more than I've ever heard of happening in Salem," said Rennie.

The suspect was arrested a block south of the Union Gospel Mission.

Rennie said that he realized the magnitude of the incident when police ran after the suspect with weapons drawn.

"I was scared because they originally had their guns drawn, and then when they were arresting him, they put them away. I didn't see what the man was holding, and so I ducked down, I thought there were going to be shots going off," said Rennie.

In all, 12 people -- all men -- were injured in the incident. Five of them were in serious condition at Salem Health, while the remaining seven were expected to survive their injuries.

Two of the people injured were staff members at the Union Gospel Mission, while the remaining 10 were guests at the shelter.

"We're asking the community to keep praying for them 'cause they're just wonderful people and our hearts are really heavy," said Smith.

Williams is booked into the Marion County Jail on 12 charges, including second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. He's being held without bail. Williams is next due in court on June 9.

Investigators say that Williams was traveling from Portland to Bend on an intercity bus line when he got off in Salem on Saturday. He arrived at the Union Gospel Mission on Sunday shortly before the attack.

"Last night, a terrible thing happened in Salem, Oregon," said Salem Mayor Julie Hoy. "Our hearts are with the folks across the street, the staff, and the victims of this tragedy."

Upkes said that the charges are preliminary. The Marion County district attorney will likely introduce more charges as the investigation continues.

Based on the initial information, Upkes said it doesn’t appear to be a targeted attack. However, he said the case remained open.

"Part of our investigation will be to kind of get a fuller picture of who Mr. Williams is," said Upkes.

Upkes said that they do not have any "real" information on a motive for the incident. Upkes could not comment on if the suspect was cooperating with police.

The Union Gospel Mission closed following the stabbing. Staff members served breakfast and lunch to people out the back door of the facility while it was closed. The mission reopened just after 5 p.m. on Monday.

"We are hard at work. We have a professional team over at the mission right now as we speak who are preparing us to get things put back in place," said Greg Smith, executive director of the Union Gospel Mission.

Smith said that he is usually a pretty steady guy emotionally, but this incident really got to him.

"I've been really broken today, and that's true of a lot of our staff. Our staff is a compassionate group. They love people, or they wouldn't be doing what they do. So their hearts are heavy," said Smith. "We're doing our best to provide them with the support that they need and to come alongside them."
