BAKER COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - The Baker County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new scam involving callers pretending to be representatives from Amazon and law enforcement officials.

According to the sheriff’s office, a resident recently received a call from someone claiming to be with Amazon. The victim was transferred several times before eventually speaking with a man who identified himself as a DEA officer.

The scammer sent the victim a picture of a fake badge and attempted to intimidate her by claiming she was involved in money laundering and that warrants would be issued against her.

Officials say the scam followed a common pattern: the caller demanded money to resolve the alleged charges, kept the victim on the phone until payment was made, and instructed her not to tell anyone about the situation.

The scammer reportedly requested that the victim mail money to an address in California.

The Baker County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that law enforcement agencies will never call and request money to dismiss charges or prevent a warrant from being issued.

If you receive a suspicious call, officials encourage you to contact the Sheriff’s Office before sending any money or providing personal information. Residents can also visit the Sheriff’s Office while still on the phone with the suspected scammer.

The sheriff’s office says one resident even attempted a three-way call with a scammer and law enforcement, causing the scammer to quickly hang up.
