Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - On April 30, around 8 p.m., a woman was sitting in her vehicle on South Front Street when she saw her passenger side door open.
According to the Albany Police Department’s (APD) incident report, suspect, 32-year-old Recardo Rodrigez Moore pulled a gun. The woman immediately exited the vehicle and ran towards the Hilton Garden Inn where she then called the police.
“In that situation, that would be my response, too. I would try and not present any conflict, and I really would just like to walk away safe,” said one Albany resident.
While both incidents occurred in Dougherty County, it was the Worth County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) that arrested the suspect.
According to Sheriff Whitaker, their Flock camera system showed the stolen vehicle driving through the county. Deputies acted immediately and pursued the vehicle which led to a brief chase ending with Moore getting tased and placed in handcuffs.
“I cannot say enough about Flock. Flock has helped us on many, many occasions. It’s like having an officer or a deputy sitting there 24/7. If we’re looking for a vehicle, that Flock camera notifies us,” said Sheriff Whitaker.
Albany residents said they are sick and tired of the gun violence, especially near the downtown area where people are known to gather.
“I honestly didn’t know about this, but it doesn’t surprise me at all though because gun violence is a problem on this side of town. I am glad the woman is okay, but I know she is traumatized,” said a former Albany resident.
Both Worth County and Albany Law enforcement say the victim of the carjacking incident handled the situation exactly how she should have.
“Don’t fight back. If you have a gun on you and this person wants to take your vehicle, let them have it. Let them have your money. No life is worth fighting something like that. Let them have your vehicle, let them be on their way. They’ll be caught just like this suspect was caught,” continued Sheriff Whitaker.
Chief Michael Persley of the Albany Police Department encourages all residents to stay vigilant and be aware of their surroundings when out at night.
