BEN HILL COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - The Ben Hill County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) is warning residents about a scam involving callers falsely claiming to be law enforcement officers.

According to the sheriff’s office, a scammer has been contacting citizens while identifying himself as “Sergeant Anthony Fields” with the Ben Hill County Sheriff’s Office. The caller tells victims they have missed federal court and may face a warrant or fine.

Authorities say these claims are false.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that deputies will never call and demand money or threaten arrest over the phone for missing court. Officials said scammers often change names, agencies, courts, or counties in an attempt to appear legitimate.

Residents are encouraged to use caution when receiving unexpected calls from someone claiming to be in law enforcement, especially if money or legal consequences are mentioned.

“If necessary, we may come speak with you in person,” the sheriff’s office said. “Unless you personally know the deputy calling you, please use caution.”
