WASHINGTON (TNND) — A tragic shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., has left two people dead: Sarah Milgrim and her soon-to-be fiancé, Yaron Lischinsky. Both worked as staffers at Israel's U.S. embassy. The suspect, apprehended by police, reportedly shouted, "Free, Free Palestine!" as he was taken away in handcuffs.
Sarah Milgrim's friend and colleague, Ayelet Razin, an Israeli criminal lawyer and human rights advocate, spoke about Milgrim's dedication to combating antisemitism.
"Peace-loving Sarah, dedicated, devoted Sarah. The irony is just unbearable. This person who dedicated her life to combat antisemitism was killed by a bigot, antisemite," Razin said.
Milgrim worked with Razin to bring attention to the gender violence committed by Hamas on October 7th through meetings with U.S. lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Their working relationship became a true friendship.
"She was a beautiful soul," said Razin. "It was devastating to get the news in general about the attack... and then you know, as if the heart can’t break enough, then came another gut-wrenching feeling when I understood it is Sarah who had been murdered."
Razin said Milgrim could feel a rise in antisemitism after the October 7th attack that she'd never felt before in the United States. This, in part, led to her work at the embassy.
"She decided that this is her role in this catastrophe and this chaos. And she used her professionalism, her expertise and her connections to do, to advocate this," explained Razin.
One of President Donald Trump's first phone calls after Wednesday's attack was to Attorney General Pam Bondi, who handed the phone to Israel's Ambassador to the U.S., Michael Leiter.
Leiter said, "Donald Trump told me that his administration is going to do everything it can possibly do to fight and end antisemitism."
The incident has intensified focus on rising antisemitism, particularly on college campuses.
Julie Rayman from the American Jewish Committee noted, "It’s chilling because those are the same chants (Free, free Palestine!) that we’ve been hearing on college campuses. That kind of language, those types of protests, were of course taken seriously by the Jewish community, by law enforcement. But not until now considered to be sources of potential violence."
Razin says the lack of response to antisemitism is what led to Milgrim and Lischinsky's deaths.
Someone needs to stop this madness, this craziness which led to this and draw the lines again... it became the cool new movement to be a part of without fully understanding the consequences and the danger as we saw tonight. It takes lives."
Columbia University student activist Mahmoud Khalil was arrested by immigration authorities, with the Justice Department arguing he spread Hamas propaganda on campus. Chants of "Free Mahmoud!" dominated Columbia's graduation ceremonies this week.
On Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security revoked Harvard University's ability to host international students. Secretary Kristi Noem stated that the decision was made to hold Harvard accountable for fostering violence and antisemitism.
