Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) —U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop, D-Ga., who represents Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District, said high early voter turnout is a sign voters feel invested in the 2026 Midterm Election.
Bishop said “there’s a lot of excitement” and “a lot of energy.” He said people are concerned about what is going on locally, nationally, and internationally.
Bishop said elections determine who will make policy at the congressional, state and local levels. That includes who will be governor and which party will have the majority in the State House and Senate.
Asked what he would say to voters who did not vote early and are undecided, Bishop said he would remind them that their vote does matter.
Bishop cited the 2018 governor’s race. “I think in 2018, in the governor’s race, for example, it was 21 votes in each precinct in the state that really could have changed the outcome of that election,” he said.
Bishop said Democrats taking the majority would put him in line to chair the Agriculture Subcommittee of Appropriations.
“Should the elections go well for us and the Democrats take the majority, I’m in line to be in a position to really help the people of Southwest Georgia because I will be in line to be chair of the Agriculture Subcommittee of Appropriations,” Bishop said.
Bishop said he is already a senior member of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee of Appropriations.
He said that funding supports military bases, including Albany’s Marine Corps Logistics Base, Fort Benning, and Robins Air Force Base.
