LINCOLN, Neb. (TNND) — House Republican Rep. Mike Flood faced a heated town hall in Lincoln, Nebraska, Monday night, with the crowd repeatedly shouting, "Tax the rich!" and "Vote him out!" while he touted President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill" signed into law in July.
Shouting and heckling began just minutes into the forum, where about 750 members attended, according to Flood.
"This is part of the process, this is the town square. Sometimes it’s the loudest voices, sometimes it’s some of the quietest. They are all here to take in democracy at this level and it’s my job to answer their questions," Flood said.
Flood addressed the concerns, particularly regarding Medicare and Medicaid, saying, "I voted for the bill because the state directed payment system, while reduced a little bit, still meant $700 to Nebraska hospitals, work requirements going to stay at 3% unemployment and lower, doesn’t worry me a bit, and not giving benefits to illegal immigrants, that’s been our law since 2008, since I’ve been speaker of the legislature. So when I say I protected Medicaid, I feel like it."
The audience exploded into chants of "Tax the rich!" when Flood discussed his support of tax provisions in the massive policy and tax bill, which he argued would benefit the middle class.
As questions continued to flow in from the audience during the hour-and-a-half event, Flood was repeatedly interrupted by the chants of "Vote him out!"
Attendees also yelled "Free Palestine" in opposition to Flood's stance on Israel.
"I support Israel. America has no better ally than Israel," Flood told the crowd.
During an impromptu news conference, he seemingly downplayed the confrontation as "spirited" but "part of the process."
"To those of you who were watching from home tonight, please know that I'm on your side," Flood wrote on social media after the event. "I never forget who I'm working for. It's an honor to serve you in Congress."
