ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - House Bill 225 would ban speed cameras completely while House Bill 651 would limit ticketing an hour to two-hour periods before and after school.

Currently, the first speed camera violation is $75, and the second is $125. If the penalty is not paid within 30 days after the final notice, some consequences include the Department of Revenue refusing to renew vehicle registration until the fine is paid. House Bill 651 would not allow this.

In 2024, 5-year-old Isaiah Silva was hit by a driver while walking home from school. Silva’s father, Arnie Silva said she believes if there were speed cameras near his son’s school, the accident could have been prevented.

“Knowing that you’re being surveillanced, everybody is going to be cautious knowing that you’re on video and knowing that you could get a ticket in the mail. It’s called slow down, obey the law or get a ticket, period,” Silva said.

Red-Speed cameras are set up in ten locations in Albany. Citations from those cameras have garnered millions of dollars.

The city of Albany reportedly keeps 65% of that money. Studies have shown these speed cameras reduce speeds, but it’s unclear if they save lives.

House Bill 225 and and House bill 651 have been moved to the State Senate, where they are being reviewed and referred to a committee.
