ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) - Thousands of demonstrators gathered in cities across the U.S. on Wednesday to protest the Trump administration’s early actions, decrying everything from the president’s immigration crackdown to his rollback of transgender rights and a proposal to forcibly transfer Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

Protesters gathered outside the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta, chanting and calling for change.

“Raise awareness, let people know that they’re not alone. They’re not the only ones who think that Donald Trump is the problem, and we can fight this but we got to come together,” said Zack Simmons, who participated in a rally outside the Georgia State Capitol.

Others criticized President Trump’s latest Cabinet pick, Russell Vought, by staging a protest in front of the offices of Georgia U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock.

“Democracy is on the line,” said organizer Abby Tennenbaum, Indivisible Regional Organizing Manager. “Government is supposed to work for us, and if it doesn’t, we’re entitled to answers.”

As crowds grew outside the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon, Atlanta News First crews saw Georgia State Patrol and other law enforcement on the scene and at least one person taken away in handcuffs.

A crowd also gathered to protest outside the Atlanta field office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), several blocks west of the Capitol.

Similar demonstrations could be seen in Philadelphia and at state capitols in Minnesota, Michigan, Texas, Wisconsin, Indiana.

“Democracy is not a spectator sport! Do something,” said a sign held aloft by one demonstrator in Philadelphia.

The protests were a result of a movement that was organized online under the hashtags #buildtheresistance and #50501, which stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one day. Websites and accounts across social media issued calls for action, with messages such as “reject fascism” and “defend our democracy.”

Trump has signed a series of executive orders in the first couple of weeks of his new term on everything from trade and immigration to climate change.
