Description

NEW YORK (TNND) — Disgraced former congressman George Santos is expected to begin serving his seven-year prison sentence on Friday after he pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft last summer.

The New York Republican was ousted from Congress in December 2023 by his House colleagues amid a slew of federal charges and accusations of fabricating his qualifications to voters.

He admitted to deceiving donors and stealing the identities of nearly a dozen people, including family members, to fund his winning campaign.

Santos must report to federal prison by 2 p.m., but it was unclear where he would serve his time.

He appeared to throw a farewell party for himself on social media Thursday night and expressed gratitude for his supporters.

“Well, darlingsThe curtain falls, the spotlight dims, and the rhinestones are packed,” he wrote on X. “From the halls of Congress to the chaos of cable news what a ride it’s been! Was it messy? Always. Glamorous? Occasionally. Honest? I tried most days.”

To my supporters: You made this wild political cabaret worth it," he continued. "To my critics: Thanks for the free press. I may be leaving the stage (for now), but trust me legends never truly exit.

A federal judge declined to give Santos a lighter two-year sentence in April, saying she was not convinced he was truly remorseful.

As part of a plea deal, he agreed to pay around $580,000 in penalties in addition to prison time.

Santos' sentencing was supposed to take place in February, but was rescheduled so he could continue to make his "Pants on Fire" podcast to pay off hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.

In early July, Santos posted about his mental health, saying he wanted everyone to know he was OK.

“I’m heading to prison, folks and I need you to hear this loud and clear: I’m not suicidal. I’m not depressed. I have no intentions of harming myself, and I will not willingly engage in any sexual activity while I’m in there,” he said on X. “If anything comes out suggesting otherwise, consider it a lie full stop.”

The White House said this week that it “will not comment on the existence or nonexistence” of any clemency request.

He became just the sixth member of the House to be expelled by a vote of his colleagues.
