ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Thanks to an initiative Dougherty County law enforcement is calling ‘Operation Early Start’, there are less guns, drugs, and wanted suspects on the Dougherty County streets.

Law enforcement across Dougherty County collaborated to conduct ‘Operation Early Start’ where they served 101 warrants and arrested 28 individuals ahead of the holiday weekend.

On Wednesday, July 2 and Thursday, July 3, the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office collaborated with the Albany-Dougherty Special Investigation Unit, the Department of Community Supervision, and the Albany Police Department to get an “early start” on the holiday weekend in an attempt to clean up the streets.

“We know that at certain times of the year, people we are looking for, we get information that they are in Atlanta or Florida. But when holidays come up, people want to be closer to family, so it gives us a better shot or chance at locating them,” said Major Victor Camp with the Albany Dougherty Special Investigative Unit.

Officials deemed this a successful operation as 28 individuals were arrested on various charges.

Some of those charges include:

  • 3 counts of drug possession
  • 11 counts of failure to appear
  • 2 counts of aggravated assault
  • 3 counts of affray, 3 counts of theft by taking
  • 1 count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

“We did 51 attempts on subjects, and we arrested 28 of those 51. We cleared 101 outstanding warrants on those outstanding individuals,” said Major Ken Faust with the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials with the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office say the seamless collaborative effort amongst multiple law enforcement agencies is the reason this operation was so successful.

“I’m happy in the way that we are networking with other agencies. You know, each agency is short personnel. In order to get the bodies out there that you need to make an operation like this successful, you have to network with outside agencies,” continued Camp.

While officials deemed ‘Operation Early Start’ a success, they say there is still more work to be done. They made 28 arrests, but there are still 23 wanted individuals.
