SNEADS, Fla. (WCTV) - One man is dead and another is hospitalized following a crash that happened during a police pursuit Thursday night in Sneads, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said in a press release that the Chattahoochee Police Department started pursuing an SUV around 9:30 p.m. on US Highway 90 that continued up to Old Spanish Trail in Sneads.

The Sneads Police Department reported the driver was fleeing from police at an estimated 130 MPH while allegedly throwing “a large amount of methamphetamines, along with a variety of other illicit drugs” from the vehicle.

As the driver, a 40-year-old man from Camilla, Ga, approached the turn from Highway 90 onto Old Spanish Trail, he lost control and crashed into “several bundles of pipes at a construction site before colliding with a large concrete manhole cover. This caused the SUV to begin overturning before colliding with a small excavator,” according to FHP. During this time, the driver was ejected from the SUV.

Once the vehicle, believed to be a 2016 Lincoln MKX, came to a stop, troopers and officers rushed to the SUV to pull the passenger, a 32-year-old man from Leesburg, Ga, from the wreckage as it became engulfed in flames.

Officers then turned their attention to the driver by performing life-saving measures, but he passed away from his injuries at the scene.

The passenger was taken via helicopter to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Sneads PD reports the man is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
