Description
MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) — Anna Hartley, a fifth-grade teacher at Okapilco Elementary School, has been named October’s Mitchell MCs A+ educator.
From veterinary plans to the classroom
Hartley said her path to teaching began with encouragement from her father. She originally planned to become a veterinarian.
“It was actually my dad. So when I was growing up, I wanted to be a vet. And then I got into college and he kept talking about how I lit up when I would be in class with other people and helping them. And he said, ‘Why don’t you think about teaching? You’ve always loved ag.’ So I went to school to do ag education. And so he said, ‘Go think about that.’ So I said, ‘Okay,’” Hartley said.
Building relationships with students
Hartley said one of the most rewarding parts of teaching is building relationships with her students and watching them learn and gain confidence.

“The kids now, there are days, obviously, just like with any job where it gets tough, but coming in and getting that relationship and being able to see their face light up when they get something, it’s always been really rewarding,” Hartley said.
Hartley’s classroom has a tradition that gives students extra motivation on test day. If the whole class scores an 80 or higher, they get a pizza party.
“We get a bet. So actually today, we have a bet every time they take a test. If the whole class makes an 80 or higher, we get a pizza party. So my homeroom today, every person just made an 80 or higher. And our class average was actually the highest that we’ve had this year, so they’re not only getting a pizza party, but they get an extra treat that they didn’t know about yet,” Hartley said.
Advice for aspiring teachers
Hartley said teaching comes with challenges, but said the rewards make it worthwhile. She advised those considering a career in education to remember why they started.
“Take it day by day. Every day is a little different. But remember, in the long run, you’re making a difference,” Hartley said.
Dr. Gistacy V. Brown, principal at Okapilco Elementary School, said Hartley’s passion for teaching and the relationships she builds with students make her stand out.
“Well, I remember the day Miss Hartley came. She was very passionate. I knew she was very intentional from her interview. And she always seeks for the best for all students. And her relationship building with the students is amazing,” Brown said.
