Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Drivers in downtown Albany are reminded to stay alert when following the Oglethorpe bridge detour routes. This comes as more traffic accidents are being reported in the area, according to Albany Police Chief Michael Persley.

Since July 22, police have responded to 11 separate accidents in the area around the Broad Street Bridge. There was at least one crash per day from July 22 to the 27, with two crashes on July 23 and 24.

A list of those crashes can be found below, with the majority occurring on East Broad Ave:

  • 7/22: Front St/W Broad
  • 7/23: W Broad
  • 7/23: E Broad/Adkins
  • 7/24: E Broad/Broadway
  • 7/24: Front St/ W Broad
  • 7/25: E Broad/Broadway
  • 7/26: W Broad/Front
  • 7/27: E Broad/ Front
  • 7/30: Broadway/ E Oglethorpe
  • 7/30: Broad/Washington
  • 8/2: E Broad/Broadway

“That means that people just be attentive. I know you want to get to where you are going but be attentive, slow down and watch the driver in front of you and watch those to the rear of you.”

The Oglethorpe bridge is expected to be reopened by July of 2026. Until then driver must use the provided detour routes on Broad Ave or the Liberty Expressway.
