WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced on Friday that it is shutting down operations at the end of its fiscal year after Congress voted to cut $1.1 billion in funding, which provides grants to NPR and PBS.

A letter informed employees that the majority of staff positions will end on Sept. 30, with a small transition remaining through January 2026 "to ensure a responsible and orderly closeout of operations."

“Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote, and petitioned Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations," Patricia Harrison, the president and CEO of CPB, said in a statement. "CPB remains committed to fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities and supporting our partners through this transition with transparency and care.”

The remaining team will focus on compliance, final distributions and resolution of long-term financial obligations, including ensuring continuity for music rights and royalties that remain essential to the public media system, the release explained.

“Public media has been one of the most trusted institutions in American life, providing educational opportunity, emergency alerts, civil discourse, and cultural connection to every corner of the country,” Harrison continued. “We are deeply grateful to our partners across the system for their resilience, leadership, and unwavering dedication to serving the American people.”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar voted against President Donald Trump's rescission package and called out Republicans for just doing the President’s bidding.

“We are voting to make the Republicans’ bad bill—the one which decimates radio and TV—better and they are still refusing to do it. All they will do is rubber stamp Trump. They are so afraid of losing their jobs that they’re not doing their jobs.”

After Congress approved defunding CPB, Trump celebrated in a post on Truth Social by saying, "HOUSE APPROVES NINE BILLION DOLLAR CUTS PACKAGE, INCLUDING ATROCIOUS NPR AND PUBLIC BROADCASTING, WHERE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR WERE WASTED. REPUBLICANS HAVE TRIED DOING THIS FOR 40 YEARS, AND FAILED.BUT NO MORE. THIS IS BIG!!!"

CPB was established in 1967 by Congress via the Public Broadcasting Act. The private, nonprofit corporation helps support the operations of more than 1,500 locally managed and operated public television and radio stations nationwide.
