Description

WASHINGTON (TNND) — Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem will visit the high-security El Salvador prison on Wednesday, where accused members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang have been held since President Donald Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act to have them deported.

"The deportations of Tren De Aragua to the El Salvadorian Terrorist Confinement Center sent a message to the world that America is no longer a safe haven for violent criminals," Noem said on Monday about her planned visit.

She added that during her visit, she will see "firsthand the detention center where the worst-of-the-worst criminals are housed" and meet with El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele to discuss how to increase the number of deportation flights and the removal of violent criminals from the U.S.

Her Wednesday visit is part of a three-day trip that will include Colombia and Mexico.

Earlier this month, Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a rarely used wartime law, to address what he describes as an urgent threat from transnational gangs.

On March 15, flights were in the air when a federal judge issued a verbal order temporarily barring the deportations and ordered planes to return to the U.S.

The Trump administration has argued that since it was a written order, the direction did not count and, therefore, did not violate a court order.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that about 261 people were deported on the flights, including 137 under the Alien Enemies Act.

Bukele offered to hold the U.S. deportees in the high-security prison during Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit in February.

He confirmed the offer in a post on X, saying El Salvador has "offered the United States of America the opportunity to outsource part of its prison system." He said his country would accept only "convicted criminals" and would charge a fee that "would be relatively low for the U.S. but significant for us, making our entire prison system sustainable."
