ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The girlfriend of David Edmond, the man accused of shooting an Albany police officer at Mount Zion Garden Apartments, spoke out for the first time.
David Edmond’s girlfriend was at the apartment when police arrived, and she witnessed the shooting from start to finish. She asked to not be identified, out of fear of retaliation. This witness said she never imagined a police call about a fight ending with gunshots.
“Nobody was supposed to get hurt at all. I’m not ok with that,” she said.
On May 5, Albany Police were responding to a fight at Mount Zion Garden Apartments between suspect David Edmond and his neighbor’s boyfriend.
According to police reports, Edmond, who was inside of his apartment, refused to communicate with police about the fight, locking himself, his girlfriend and her two children inside the apartment.
Edmond’s girlfriend said this caused police to “attempt to open the door so that [they] could communicate with David about the incident.”
Still, Edmond’s girlfriend said she was not a hostage.
“Saying we were kidnapped and held hostage... No!” she said.
According to the police report, Edmond shot Corporal Alexander Price in the arm while Price was opening the apartment door. Edmond’s girlfriend said she’s grateful police didn’t shoot back.
“I was very shocked. I was very scared. But if you put yourself in this situation, you would be terrified thinking you would be dead. I just wish things could’ve gone differently.”
David Edmond has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, battery and terroristic threats.
Corporal Price is still in the hospital recovering from his injuries.
