ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Almost 200 of the South Korean nationals detained by ICE during a massive raid on a south Georgia Hyundai plant are planning to file a lawsuit against the federal agency.

The suit alleges unlawful policing and arrests, racial profiling, human rights violations and excessive force, an attorney representing the plaintiffs told ABC News.

On Sept. 4, federal authorities flooded the large manufacturing site in Ellabell — about 20 miles northwest of Savannah — where Hyundai makes electric vehicles. It was the largest single-site operation in ICE’s two-decade history.

About 475 people were detained, most of them South Korean nationals, according to Homeland Security Investigations. Federal leaders said they had been investigating allegedly illegal hirings at the site for months.

The raid sparked tension with South Korea, whose citizens were shocked to see videos of the workers with chains shackled around their hands, ankles and waists. The workers were flown back home on a charter plane about a week later, and some have since returned to the Hyundai plant.

Many of the South Korean nationals were brought to the site to complete work that Americans aren’t trained to do. During an address at the recent U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum, President Donald Trump said he supports skilled immigrants coaching U.S. workers.

“Those people are going to teach our people how to make computer chips, and in a short period of time, our people are going to be doing great. And those people can go home,” he said.

On the Hyundai raid, Trump said the South Korean workers had been told to leave, but “I said, ‘Stop it. Don’t be stupid.’”
