Description

MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) — A magnolia tree that has stood in downtown Moultrie for over 100 years has been designated as a Liberty Tree to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

The designation recognizes the tree as a symbol of freedom and patriotism for the South Georgia community.

“A Liberty Tree means that there were people who sacrificed everything to stand under that tree and say what they believed and what they wanted to do to get a free nation,” said Nancy Coleman, a member of the Moultrie-Colquitt County America 250 committee. “To have a Liberty Tree in Moultrie in 2026 means that the Spirit of America, the spirit of 1776, is still alive and well.

The celebration included battle reenactments and demonstrations from the Revolutionary War period.

Errol Griffin, a member of the Sons of American Revolution, said the designation holds personal significance.

“It means a lot, actually. I’m a retired Army National Guard officer and combat veteran,” Griffin said. “As a member of the Sons of American Revolution, my ancestors also fought in the American Revolution. So to be part of the Liberty Tree designation is just a real honor to be a member of the color Guard as well, to represent the SAR.”

The event featured vendors, bounce houses and patriotic decorations at local shops around the square.

“We felt a very strong need to do something to commemorate America’s 250th birthday,” Coleman said. “I am overwhelmed at the number of people who’ve come today. It’s been truly a great blessing... Proud to be an American today.”
