PLAIN CITY, Ohio (WSYX) — Nearly two years after the body of a newborn baby was found in a garbage truck in Plain City, investigators say they’ve identified the baby's mother.
Watch Live: Police speak after identifying the mother.
Anuradha Manukonda is charged with gross abuse of a corpse, a fifth-degree felony, in connection with the death of "Madison Baby Doe," who was found in the garbage truck in the 100 block of Bluestem Lane in Plain City in June 2023.
Manukonda pleaded not guilty during her first court appearance Wednesday in Madison County Common Pleas Court, police said.
Plain City police released a statement Wednesday indicating that on March 13, a grand jury returned a single-count indictment against Manukonda. Police haven’t explained how she was identified as a suspect, but investigators questioned her and obtained a DNA sample.
Chief Dale McKee said forensic science and the assistance of the State Bureau of Criminal Investigation were key to the case.
The statement added that Manukonda "did not reside or work within Plain City or Madison County." It remains unclear where she is from.
Police say Manukonda placed the girl in an exterior roll out trash can.
The delay in the discovery of the body, along with injuries caused by the garbage truck “made it impossible” to determine a cause a death, but police said there’s no evidence to support allegations of a homicide.
