COFFEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Teacher turnover continues to be a growing concern across the country, impacting classrooms and student success.
According to the Learning Policy Institute, teacher turnover remains a persistent challenge in the United States, straining schools, disrupting student learning and making it harder to build a stable and diverse workforce. Every year, about 1 in 7 public school teachers either leave the profession or move schools.
Experts say most of those departures are not due to retirement, but instead linked to job stress, working conditions and burnout.
But one teacher in South Georgia is working to change that narrative.
Tammy Bennett, an educator at Citizens Christian Academy in Coffee County, recently published a book aimed at encouraging teachers after years in the classroom.
She says the goal is simple—remind educators why they started.
Bennett is also launching a series of short books highlighting the stories and characters of graduating seniors at the school. Each graduate will receive a personalized book reflecting the legacy they leave behind.
She believes celebrating both teachers and students can help rebuild morale in education.
Bennett said she hopes her work can serve as a positive community story during a time when many educators are leaving the profession.
As schools nationwide continue to face staffing shortages, efforts like Bennett’s aim to uplift and retain the teachers still in the classroom.
