Description

ASHBURN, Ga. (WALB) — A man wanted out of Henry County in connection to a homicide was shot by officers Saturday, Oct. 3 after a pursuit that ended in Ashburn, according to Sheriff Andy Hester.

Hester said Henry County issued a BOLO for a subject wanted in connection with a homicide. Hester said Henry County advised that a northbound Flock camera in Turner County had registered a hit on the suspect’s vehicle.

A Turner County deputy went to I-75 to attempt contact with the suspect. While checking gas stations near Exit 82, the deputy spotted the vehicle at a Circle K. The deputy called for backup, and when additional units arrived, they attempted to take the suspect into custody.

Ashburn Police Department also responded to assist. The suspect got back into the vehicle and ran away from the scene.

Ashburn Police and Turner County deputies pursued the suspect through the city of Ashburn and onto U.S. Highway 41 South. Near the 900 block of Highway 41 South, police performed a PIT maneuver, sending the vehicle into the yard of an abandoned house.

As officers approached the vehicle, the suspect brandished a firearm, according to Hester. Officers then shot the suspect.

Hester said it is unclear whether the suspect or officers fired first. Some officers on scene said they believe the suspect fired once and pointed the gun out the window. Hester said officers returned fire after the suspect brandished the weapon.

The suspect was shot multiple times, including what Hester described as a visible head wound and additional wounds to the body. Hester said the exact number of times the suspect was struck, and by which officers, will be determined by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s inquiry.

The suspect was transported to a hospital in Tifton and has since been transported to Macon.

The name of the suspect has not been released.

Hester said he does not know details of the Henry County homicide the suspect is wanted in connection with, including the identity of the victim. Henry County is handling that investigation.

The GBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Due to the recent Flock camera controversy, WALB asked Hester about the use of Flock cameras. Hester replied stating that when used properly, Flock cameras produce results like this case. He said misuse of the technology by some officers has led to arrests of those officers, but said agencies using the cameras correctly get results such as this one.

No officers were injured in the incident, according to Hester. No citizens were struck.
