MACON, Ga. (WGXA) — Hispanic heritage is being celebrated in Macon-Bibb County with the return of the Macon Bibb Hispanic Festival this October.

Sponsored by the county, the festival will feature Hispanic cultural dances, music, and food.

"We're really excited to have this event once again. It's really an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate Hispanic heritage, Hispanic culture, and really just a time to unite everyone," said Edna Adams, Macon-Bibb County communications manager.

She emphasized the festival as a chance to explore Hispanic cultures and try new foods, noting, "There are 20 Hispanic countries and so you get to learn a bit more about that here. It's really a taste of that entire culture."

However, another festival that had been held at Smiley's Flea Market for the past 10 years was canceled last week. Organizers cited fears of ICE agents as the reason.

Moises Velez told WGXA, "When the risk of disruption by ICE raids could jeopardize the sense of trust and security we’ve built, we cannot in good conscience proceed. Our community deserves a celebration free from fear and uncertainty."

Despite the cancellation, Macon-Bibb County assures that its festival will proceed as planned with security measures in place

. "We want to make sure the event is fun but safe for everyone in the community. Every year we do have security that is part of it. We partner with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office," said Adams.

Community member Galya Ortiz supports the decision to cancel the flea market festival and appreciates the county's efforts to continue its festival with security.

"I feel like it very nice that they're still doing it. I know they probably know that some people won't come due to fact of everything that's going on but I know some people might still go and enjoy," Ortiz said.
