ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Albany State University was put on lockdown Friday night (Oct. 23) as a precaution due to a nearby domestic situation.

Albany Police Chief Michael Persley confirms officers responded just before 8 p.m. Friday night to a domestic situation in the 100 block of Broadway Street near campus. A woman had reported her son was attacking her while they were in a car. During the incident, police say he pulled a gun from her purse. The woman ran from the car to a nearby business. Not long after, police say a gunshot was heard, and the suspect ran toward Union Baptist Church.

As a precaution, the university was put on lockdown. Police emphasize this was not an active shooter situation on campus. Officers are actively looking for the man involved.

The chief says the domestic incident did not happen on campus, and there is no active threat to the campus.

The university sent out an alert to students Friday night advising them to stay inside. According to the alert, the suspect is armed and is described as a white man wearing a purple shirt.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call APD at 229-431-2100, or submit a tip using the department’s app.
