LEESBURG, Ga. (WALB) - Plans to move Leesburg in the right direction of steady growth continued Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the Train Depot in Lee County.

Wednesday’s meeting was extremely interactive for those who attended.

“Leesburg is doing something very unique that most community’s don’t do,” Doug Stoner, Director of Business Development for Foresite Group LLC., said. “They’re looking at both transportation and land use simultaneously. It’s important understanding your transportation network and your land use and how they work together in the sense of what type of community you want to develop. Not just in the next few years, but 20 years from now.”

Foresite Group LLC., who is helping the city of Leesburg’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA) plan for the expansion, placed several boards around the room labeled with key areas that could see growth. The key areas included housing, recreation, natural resources, transportation, and land use and development. The boards also had policies that followed under each key area and ways the policies could be implemented.

Attendees were able to walk around and place stars on the policies they believed would help move the city in the direction of growth. They also placed a coin in the cup of what they felt needed to be prioritized and implemented first.

Foresite Group LLC. works with communities of all sizes. Employees said that each month, the people of Leesburg amaze them.

“It’s been very impressive here in Leesburg to see the amount of participation which tells you a lot about the folks in this community. They’re very interested in the future of their community.”

The next comprehensive plan meeting is Dec. 17. The meeting will be open to the public.

Leaders said Wednesday that they plan to have a final draft of the comprehensive plan for the city in January. They say they expect it to be adopted in March 2026 at the latest.
