LEESBURG, Ga. (WALB) — Lee County High School defeated then-No. 11-seeded Carol City this week, a win that put the Trojans in the top 25 of the national rankings.

Lee County was named the You Save It Pharmacy Team of the Week.

Defense starts the scoring

The Trojans started their scoring on the defensive side of the ball. K.J. Streeter had a pick-six in the first half. It was the only score for Lee County in the first half.

Head coach Dean Fabrizio credited Miami Carol City for making the trip to South Georgia.

“Miami Carol City’s got a great football team. They’re going to compete for a state title in Florida this year,” Fabrizio said. “A lot of kudos to them for coming up here. Big respect for them. Making that long trip and taking us on. What an incredible atmosphere. It’s just great for this community, and not only just Lee County, but all of South Georgia, to bring that kind of attention here.”

Offense responds in second half

In the second half, the Lee County offense found its rhythm. Cohen Lawson threw a pass to Destin Bell to bring the Trojans within one score. Dominique Ball then scored to complete the comeback.

“Down at halftime to a great team, we made some corrections. Nobody panicked. We came out, made the adjustments. Kids corrected mistakes, and we were able to pull out a hard-fought win over a really good football team,” Fabrizio said.

Fabrizio said field position shifted in the second half.

“The whole first half, it seemed like the field position was against us. And the second half, it kind of flipped. We established field position right away and kept it the whole half. And I think that was huge,” Fabrizio said.

Defense holds after halftime

The Lee County defense recorded a shutout in the second half.

“We’ve got a veteran defense. A lot of guys have played a lot of football. Our defensive coaches do a fantastic job,” Fabrizio said. “I was really impressed with the way they didn’t panic and just stayed the course. And that’s a sign of a veteran group.”

Community support

Fabrizio said more than 8,000 people attended the game.

“This football program means a lot to a lot of people. The amount of former players at the game that played here, played for me, and some who played before me, and the pride they have of playing for Lee County is just a special thing,” Fabrizio said. “When you see 8,000-plus people at a football game, you see how much it means to people here in Lee County and this community. And it’s a special place to play football here at Lee County.”

Next up

Fabrizio said Lee County will travel to play a Sequoyah team that reached the third round of the playoffs last season and finished 12-1. He said Sequoyah is 2-0 this year.

“We’re the team traveling a long way this week. We’re the team that got the bullseye on us, and we’ve had to refocus pretty quick and put that game behind us, because if not, it’ll be a short-lived win streak traveling up there to play these guys, because they can certainly beat us if we’re not at our best,” Fabrizio said.
