LOS ANGELES (TNND) — Former Vice President Kamala Harris has a new security detail from the Los Angeles Police Department after President Donald Trump withdrew her extended Secret Service protection last month.
Up to 11 officers with the LAPD Metropolitan Division have been pulled from working cases to provide Harris with protection, according to KTTV.
Under federal law, a former vice president receives six months of protection after leaving office, while a former president receives protection for life.
Harris' protection ended on July 21, but was extended for an additional year under an undisclosed directive by former President Joe Biden.
The move comes as Harris prepares to go on a multi-city book tour for the release of her new memoir, "107 Days." The memoir recounts Harris’s 107-day presidential campaign — the shortest in U.S. history.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) also offered protection, according to the Los Angeles Times.
However, Gov. Gavin Newsom would need to sign off on the new arrangement with the CHP for it to go into effect.
Mayor Karen Bass told KTTV that revoking Harris' protection is an "act of revenge following a long list of political retaliation in the form of firings."
"This puts the former Vice President in danger and I look forward to working with the Governor to make sure Vice President Harris is safe in Los Angeles," Bass continued.
In March, Trump ended Secret Service protection assigned to former President Joe Biden's adult children.
“We are aware of the President’s decision to terminate protection for Hunter and Ashley Biden,” the agency said in a statement. “The Secret Service will comply and is actively working with the protective details and the White House to ensure compliance as soon as possible.”
