Description

LANIER COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - On Tuesday, Jan. 14, Lanier County Schools released a letter to students and parents about the PowerSchool data breach.

“It is important to note that this incident targeted PowerSchool, not Lanier County Schools. Unfortunately, this event has impacted PowerSchool customers across the United States and Canada,” said the letter.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, PowerSchool notified the school system’s leadership team of a “cybersecurity incident” that may have involved unauthorized access to certain PowerSchool Student Information System (SIS) customer data, including information that may have involved unauthorized access to Lanier County Schools.

As of Monday, Jan. 13, PowerSchool confirmed that some of the compromised data pertains to families and staff members in the school district, according to the school system.

The letter stated that the compromised data primarily includes parent and student contact information, such as names and addresses. PowerSchool also reported that for some people across its customer base, personally identifiable information (PII), such as Social Security numbers and medical information was impacted.

“PowerSchool is actively investigating whether PII belonging to our students, staff, or families was affected and is working urgently to provide further details,” the letter said.

In the letter, the school system said the following:

The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority. PowerSchool has assured us that they are taking steps to address the situation and will provide additional information and resources, including credit monitoring or identity protection services if applicable. We will share these updates with you as soon as they become available.
