KENNESAW, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Police said a Kennesaw State University student was shot and killed during a gunfight at an off-campus student apartment complex near the university.

Police also said the suspect’s mother was injured.

One person is in custody.

The shooting happened Sunday night at the Bixby Kennesaw apartments, located along the 3000 block of George Busbee Parkway, which is across the street from Fifth Third Stadium.

According to Cobb County police, officers found a woman near the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds.

A man was found inside an apartment with a gunshot wound. He taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. Police identified him as Jalen Parker, 24, from Albany.

KSU officials said he was a mechanical engineering student at the university.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victims’ family, friends, and the campus community during this incredibly difficult time,” said KSU President Kathy Schwaig.

Police said detectives believe the suspect, Anthony Lockett, 22, of Kennesaw, was in the apartment earlier when an argument happened. He then left, “returned with family members, confronted people inside with a gun and then fired multiple shots inside the apartment,” which hit Parker.

A person living in the apartment shot back, according to police. During that exchange, the suspect’s mother, 40-year-old Antoinette Hammonds of Kennesaw, was shot. She was taken to the parking lot where first responders found her and was later taken to Kennestone Hospital, where she is in stable condition.

Lockett was arrested and is facing charges of aggravated assault and felony murder.

University officials said the apartment complex was “acquired by the KSU Foundation,” and that it’s a privately managed property and isn’t KSU’s on-campus housing.

School officials said an alert was not sent “as it was determined that there was no immediate threat to campus.”

The university, KSU officials said, is offering support and resources to those affected by the deadly incident.

Atlanta News First has reached out to the apartment complex for comment.

Albany is over 200 miles south of Kennesaw.
