Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful, alongside Dougherty County, is officially launched its “Litter is UnLawful” Campaign on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

City and county leaders met Wednesday morning at the Government Center downtown to announce the campaign. They said keeping Albany and Dougherty County clean is a shared commitment and that it starts with residents.

Partnership targets littering and illegal dumping

Albany and Dougherty County leaders are cracking down on littering and illegal dumping. The effort is a partnership between Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful, Dougherty County government and police agencies.

“This morning, we declared war on littering,” County Commissioner Anthony Jones said. “People are throwing trash on the streets and on the roads. We’re not going to tolerate it anymore.”

The goal of the campaign is to bring attention to litter prevention and encourage residents to play an active role in keeping their neighborhoods and city clean.

The initiative is meant to highlight community responsibility, environmental stewardship and the importance of protecting the appearance and well-being of local neighborhoods.

Signs to list fines

Lauryn Griffin, Project Manager with Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful said signs will be placed around the city wards.

“We are having some signs that will be placed around the city wards. Basically, showing residents that littering is unlawful, yes, and there will be a fine of up to $1,000,” Griffin said.

Traffic engineers are expected to put up the signs in the coming days and weeks. Leaders said the signs will be located throughout Albany and Dougherty County to discourage people from throwing trash on the side of the road.

How residents can help

“We got to all pitch in because it’s not one job — it’s everyone’s job,” Jones said.

Commissioner Jones encourages residents to take their trash to the landfill and to make sure it is tied tight to prevent it from flying out.

The campaign emphasizes the idea of “if you see something, then say something.”

Residents who want a sign in their neighborhood can contact Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful at 229-302-3098.
