ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — The Albany Police Department (APD) partnered with the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) for an Enforcement and Impaired Driving Operation during Albany State University’s homecoming week.

Chief Persley says citizens may notice an increased police presence in the coming weeks as well. Persley said, “All of this is focused on activity, historic activity, but from recent trends that we’ve seen of how we can address it.” The operation is a continued effort from the city.

From Oct. 4 through Oct. 10, Chief Persley said officers made over 200 traffic stops. These numbers do not include GSP stops. APD traffic enforcement resulted in:

  • 7 DUI cases
  • 23 arrests
  • 5 recovered firearms

Of the 23 arrests, 6 were for people wanted by APD, according to Chief Persley. Two of the arrests were for people on APD’s repeat offenders list. The repeat offenders were taken to the Dougherty County Jail.

Chief Persley said that of the five firearms recovered, two were reported stolen. One of the recovered firearms was converted to an automatic firearm with an illegal switch modification. That case will be turned over to federal officials.
