Description

(TNND) — Israel identified two of the four hostages whose coffins it received from Hamas in the first stage of a delicate cease-fire that has allowed Palestinians to return to their homes in Gaza and reunited families with hostages.

The Israel Defense Forces identified two of the deceased hostages that were returned on Monday as Guy Iluz and Bipin Joshi.

Iluz was kidnapped and injured and hurt by Hamas after escaping the Nova music festival. He later died from his wounds because he did not receive proper medical care, the IDF said. He was 26 at the time of his death.

Joshi was kidnapped from Kibbutm Alumim while hiding in a bomb shelter. The IDF said he was killed while in captivity during the first months of the war.

Two other deceased hostages were also returned to Israel in the initial exchange and have not yet been identified.

“Alongside the grief and the understanding that their hearts will never be whole, the return of Guy and Bipin, may their memories be a blessing, together with two additional deceased hostages, brings some measure of comfort to families who have lived with agonizing uncertainty and doubt for over two years,” the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in a statement. “We will not rest until all 24 hostages are brought home.”

The final 20 living hostages were released back to Israel on Monday as the cease-fire with Hamas was in effect. Hamas was also supposed to provide the bodies of 28 hostages who died or were killed in captivity but was reportedly unable to locate all their bodies. The bodies of U.S. citizens, Itay Chen and Omer Neutera, may still be in Gaza.

“The IDF expresses deep condolences to the families, and continues to make every effort to return all the hostages, as Hamas is required to fulfill its part of the agreement and make the necessary efforts to return all the hostages to their families and to proper burial,” IDF said.

Israel and Hamas acknowledged there could be difficulties recovering the hostages bodies due to the level of destruction in Gaza. If Hamas was unable to find them, a joint task force will be established including the U.S. and others to share information to help find them, the New York Times reported.

“The urgent task we are all committed to now is ensuring the return of all the bodies of the hostages home,” Israeli defense minister Israel Katz said on social media. “Any deliberate delay or refusal will be considered a blatant violation of the agreement and will be met accordingly.”

The 20 living hostages were taken for medical care upon their release, and some will need to stay in hospitals for weeks before they can return to their homes.
