ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — With Hurricane Isaias now a Category 3 hurricane and making landfall Friday night, Albany State University (ASU) has made some changes to its Homecoming celebrations.

The annual Homecoming parade that was scheduled for Saturday morning has been canceled.

However, the severe weather hasn’t stopped students, faculty, staff, and alumni from making their way to campus and celebrating 123 years of Homecoming.

ASU’s campus and the City of Albany are buzzing with family and alumni visiting this weekend.

Students are still determined to not let the weather have the final say on their Homecoming plans.

“We’re going to stay resilient. The weather isn’t going to bother us or anything like that. We’re still going to celebrate,” said Darren Smith, a junior at the university.

As the university celebrates over a century of Ram pride, Smith says the authenticity and atmosphere on campus are what really keep the momentum going.

“We’re still going to have camaraderie. That’s the one thing about ASU- that’s really our niche. We’re the most authentic HBCU you could possibly have. The southern hospitality, just everything. We’re going to continue to once again celebrate this 123 years and enjoy this amazing Homecoming,” said Smith.

Alongside students, local vendors are also glad to be present for the festivities.

“I’m happy for the people that did come. For the people who didn’t look at the weather. People who felt like, ‘I’m coming anyway.’ This is an annual event. It only happens once a year. I still feel like people are happy to come. I’m still happy to come.”

The Homecoming football game against Lane College is still scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at the ASU Coliseum.
