ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Westover Comprehensive High School broke ground on two new buildings today, a state-of-the-art gym as well as a three-story academic tower.

Members of the Dougherty County School Board and community members gathered to witness and participate in the groundbreaking.

The current gym that was built 57 years ago, will be replaced by a 48,000-square-foot facility. The new gym will accommodate up to 2,000 people.

Principal William Chunn says the gym isn’t just for the students, it is also for the alumni who always show strong support to their alma mater.

“They’re always giving back to the Westover students, staff, and the entire Westover community,” Chunn said. “Just recently, during our 2025 Alumni Weekend, they showed up in huge numbers and supported us overwhelmingly, generating $40,000 in revenue for Westover High School, I say to them, Job well done.”

There will also be a three-story academic tower that will hold 24 new classrooms with lab space.

Dougherty County Schools Superintendent Kenneth Dyer, who is also an Alumni of Westover says he is happy to experience the growth coming to the school.

“There will be nothing better in the state of Georgia than what you’re going to see on Westover boulevard come the end of this year,”

The new gym is expected to be completed by October 31, 2026, and the academic tower should be completed by December 2026.
