Description

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - More than a week into early voting in Georgia, more than a million ballots have already been cast.

Top races for governor, U.S. Senate and other statewide offices are on the ballot. Voters will also decide on three amendments that could change state law.

Amendment one: farm property tax break

Georgia voters will decide whether big farms should get a bigger property tax break.

Farmers currently get a discount for keeping land in production, but only up to 2,000 acres. Amendment one would double that to 4,000 acres.

Amendment two: probate judge elections

Amendment two deals with how probate judges are elected. Probate courts handle wills, guardianships, marriage licenses and weapons carry licenses.

Currently, 53 counties, including Muscogee, elect those judges with a party affiliation listed on the ballot, also called partisan. Every other Georgia judge runs nonpartisan.

A yes vote would make probate judges nonpartisan, meaning no party affiliation would be required.

Amendment three: 911 funding

Amendment three is about 911 funding. Residents currently pay $1.50 on their cell bill for local 911, but that money isn’t locked in, and technology varies by county.

Only 17 of 159 counties have next generation 911. A yes vote would let lawmakers create a dedicated fund for upgrades, allowing texts, photos, video to 911, and exact locations.

Voter turnout

Governor, U.S. Senate, lieutenant governor and other top races are on the ballot along with the three amendments.

According to the Secretary of State’s office, more than 130,000 Georgians voted Tuesday, including more than 1,800 in Muscogee County.
