Description

ATLANTA — Georgia defeated Alabama 28-7 Saturday night to win the SEC Championship, marking the Bulldogs’ second consecutive conference title and 16th overall.

The victory sends Georgia (12-1) to the College Football Playoff, while Alabama’s postseason fate will be determined by the selection committee Sunday.

First half dominance

Georgia took control early when Alabama’s punt was blocked, giving the Bulldogs possession at the Crimson Tide’s 10-yard line. Quarterback Gunner Stockton connected with Roderick Robinson II for the opening touchdown.

With 1:30 remaining in the first quarter, Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson’s pass was intercepted by Georgia’s Daylen Everette.

In the second quarter, Stockton found Bell wide open in the end zone on third and goal, sending Georgia to halftime with a 14-0 lead.

Historic defensive performance

Georgia extended its lead in the third quarter when Nate Frazier scored from nine yards out. The shutout marked the first time a team had been held scoreless through three quarters of an SEC Championship game.

Zachariah Branch added a fourth touchdown before Alabama scored its only points of the game, making the final score 28-7.

The Georgia defense limited Alabama to three third-down conversions, compared to 13 conversions when the teams met in Week 4. The Bulldogs held Alabama to minus-3 net rushing yards.

This marks the 12th consecutive year at least one of these teams has played for the SEC Championship.
