The agency said Michels was visiting the clinic for a walk-in mental health consultation.

After shooting Crews inside the clinic, Michels exited and encountered police officers and an armed civilian, according to the GBI.

Michels was reportedly armed with a handgun and exchanged gunfire with the officers and the civilian.

Michels was hit by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene.

Jasper police asked the GBI to investigate, which is standard for shootings involving officers.

The bodies of Crews and Michels will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for autopsies.

The GBI said it will hand over its case file to the Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review once its investigation is complete.

An online fundraiser has been set up for Crews’ family and it has already raised nearly $250,000.
