WASHINGTON (TNND) — Allegations have surfaced from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who claims that intelligence regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election was "manufactured." Gabbard accused officials from the Obama administration of using their positions for political purposes.
In a newly released report, Gabbard's office assessed that key intelligence was "manipulated and withheld" from the public. The report specifically called out former FBI Director James Comey, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former CIA Director John Brennan, and former President Barack Obama, referencing a December 9, 2016, National Security Council meeting.
"The task that came out of that meeting was coming from President Obama, directing the intelligence community to produce an intelligence assessment that detailed not if but how Moscow affected the outcome of the election that had already occurred, electing Donald Trump to the presidency," said Gabbard.
The report suggested a cover-up of crucial information about Russia's intent and capabilities in hacking election systems and infrastructure. However, declassified documents from the time stated that "foreign adversaries do not have and will probably not obtain the capabilities to successfully execute widespread and undetected cyber attacks."
Critics have slammed Gabbard's claims as dishonest and dangerous. Representative Jim Himes of Connecticut said on CBS's "Face the Nation," "It is well known and well established [Russia] hacked into the DNC and undertook any number of other influence operations, including buying reams of Facebook ads to discredit Hillary Clinton. That is not in contention."
Gabbard announced plans to release more documents in the coming days and intends to refer several Obama administration officials to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution.
