Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – A fire near Blaylock Street in East Albany has been successfully contained, and there is no active threat at this time, according to Wendy Burnett with Georgia Forestry.

The fire, which began last night, involved two acres of slash pine wood chips. Georgia Forestry responded quickly and is currently installing sprinklers on the piles to help keep the fire under control. Given the highly flammable nature of the material, the piles may continue to burn for several hours or even days.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
No injuries have been reported at this time.

The Albany Fire Department is assisting with the efforts, and both teams will remain on site until all traces of the fire are completely extinguished. Fortunately, they were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding 10-11 acres of slash pine chips.

The Dougherty County EMA said in a press release that the smell of smoke may be present throughout the community, and those close to the area may see smoke and flames. The EMA reiterated that the fire is under control.

Experts said the smoke in the area may impact vulnerable communities like people with lung or heart conditions, young children and pregnant people.

“The smoke can certainly trigger an asthma attack, coughing and shortness of breath in individuals with any sort of chronic lung disease. But you should be aware of other symptoms such as headache or chest pain that you might not initially connect with the smoke. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should go to a safe, indoor location and seek medical care if the symptoms worsen.”

Dr. Akers also advised that anyone who uses an inhaler or oxygen therapy should make sure they have ample supply on hand.

There have been no injuries reported, and authorities have lifted the road closure in the affected area of Blaylock Street and Evelyn Avenue.

WALB will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as we learn more.

No injuries have been reported at this time.  However, authorities have blocked off the affected area of Blaylock Street and Evelyn Avenue.
