Description
COLLETON CO, SC. (WTOC) - On the night of June 7th, 2021 a call came into 9-1-1 dispatch.
“This is Alex Murdaugh at 4147 Mosel Rd. I need the police and an ambulance immediately! My wife and child have been shot badly!”
Alex Murdaugh, the former South Carolina attorney, made that 9-1-1 call from his family’s Colleton County hunting property. His wife Maggie and younger son Paul were dead.
Murdaugh has since been convicted of being the one who shot his loved ones.
Both his wife Maggie and son Paul died that night.
In 2023 came their opportunity for justice in the eyes of South Carolina. Murdaugh’s double murder trial included hundreds of pieces of evidence, just like that initial 9-1-1 call.
Murdaugh himself even took the stand, sticking to his story of innocence from the night of June 7th, 2021.
His defense attorney Jim Griffin started Murdaugh’s testimony with the question on everyone’s mind.
Griffin: “Mr. Murdaugh... did you take this gun, or any gun like it, and blow your son’s brains out on June 7th, or any day, or any time”
Murdaugh: “No, I did not.”
Griffin: “Did you shoot a 300 blackout into her head, causing her death?”
Murdaugh: ”Mr. Griffin, I did not shoot my wife or my son any time... ever.”
The jury didn’t believe that and the former attorney was sentenced to back to back life sentences in prison.
He’s been appealing ever since.
Right now that appeal is tied up in court. Murdaugh is asking for a new trial, based on claims of jury tampering.
We are waiting on prosecutors to formally respond to Murdaugh’s legal team as to why that should not be the case. From there, a judge will decide if the convicted murderer gets a new trial.
